Ethical Use of Soft Skills to Address Social Justice Issues in Interpreting facilitated by Amanda Tuite

Have you ever been in a situation as an interpreter where you wanted to speak up but you couldn’t because you didn’t know how? This workshop will analyze our understanding of social justice and interpreting ethics and discuss how interpersonal communication skills such as listening, empathy, conflict resolution, and respect for others are crucial to the foundation of effective interpreting and effective communication.

Interpreters and clients can work together effectively when interpreters understand intersectionality, power and privilege, systematic oppression, and how soft skills can influence positive outcomes. This can be achieved by learning more about the needs of clients and how to apply ethical behavior as an interpreter’s professional responsibility.

Throughout this interactive workshop, participants will work together to identify signs of oppression and discuss how the interpreter can ethically respond. Discussion and group activities will be used to adapt and apply soft skill techniques using real-world scenarios.

  1. Participants will examine how the interpreter’s identity, the experience of oppression, and bias impacts the interpreting work.
  2. Participants will be able to demonstrate an increased self-awareness and personal understanding.
  3. Participants will develop skills in effective interpersonal communications.
  4. Participants will identify three different interpersonal communication styles as well as which style of communication is in need of improvement.
  5. Participants will evaluate different perspectives, and navigate the complexity that comes with a variety of perspectives.
  6. Participants will identify the hard skills that interpreters already have.
  7. Participants will explain how oppressive behaviors are forms of unethical action.
  8. Participants will identify the conscious & unconscious bias in the workplace and put strategies in place to reduce its impact.
  9. Participants will explore different scenarios where assumptions impact the actions taken by the agent.
  10. Participants will define intersectionality, power and privilege, systematic oppression & white supremacy.

 Learning Outcomes 

In terms of diversity & inclusion, the attendees of this webinar/workshop should be able to:

Explore different perspectives:

  • Demonstrate openness to new perspectives and diverse others.
  • Explore one’s own personal perspective when appropriate, a process that frequently requires courage and/or humility.
  • Listen while withholding judgment about the new or unfamiliar information.
  • Appreciate the importance of understanding how unconscious bias works.
  • How clients may have recognized some of the interpreter’s hidden preferences, assumptions, and biases.
  • Know how to think more critically and consciously when making decisions.
  • Be aware of the dangers of prejudice and stereotyping other people.

  • Seek points of connection and interact substantively with those who are different from themselves.
  • Demonstrate communication skills that enable intercultural communication, including effective listening skills.

Explore Cultural Knowledge and Self-Awareness

  • Describe various elements inherent to one’s own culture and to other cultures: history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, beliefs, practices, etc.
  • Recognize and critically reflect upon one’s own cultural biases.
